Arrests at Johor’s anti-crime protest June 17, 2007

A group of Johor Bahru’s residents today, on their own initiative, organized a demonstration in front of the residence of the Johor Menteri Besar.
When the demonstration was almost over, the Police moved in to arrest 2 activists, Nyam Kee Han and See Siew Min. from Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) Johor Bahru branch, who leafleted there in the morning.
The demonstration was organised to bring to the attention of the MB, the rising crime rate in Johor Bahru, and to call on him to take immediate action.
The leaflet that they distributed urged for immediate setting up of the Independent Police Complaint and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC), as recommended by the Royal Commission on police reform.
Guess the cops didn’t like that at all, and to be told they were doing a really bad job.
They are currently being held at the IPD Johor Bahru (Selatan) police station.
So once again, the police of Johor Bahru prefer to waste public funds on intimidating activists instead of crime-busting. So when the next time there’s another crime committed, the Investigating officers can say, “Sorry Tuan … Busy lar….”

The police managed to catch…..erhhh…still practicing lah. Tried toll protesters, now anti-crime activists. When the training is done, the criminals will be in big big trouble. 😛
The Police’s job is to prevent people from occupying lock-ups because they WANT to use the lock-ups only for their own purpose.
In the best tradition of penalising and intimidating whistle blowers, not wrong doings.

The crime rate is rising because of people like monsterball around. So why ask me to go elsewhere. He is a living proof of how crime started and it relevant here and no where else. You want to challenge me.
If this incident happened in “Malay” area, police will act fast. Crime rate in Malay area is less compare to others why?
Even robbers know where to select area in doing crimes and they know very well these area the police force will careless.

MCA denies any involvement on the above? Or is it becos NGO’s , the victims, their family and Johor citizens did not get approval from MCA to organise the peaceful demonstration?

The gathering just went to reinforce what everyone has been fearing all along that the crime rate in JB has reached an alarming level. I wonder whether anyone will still be coming in to invest in the IDR, especially the Singaporeans. Looks like this project is going to end up like another white elephant with tax payers money flushed down the toilet bowl.
my experience with Malaysian Police does not bear well….I was victim of a crime in Johor….and all the Police did was to tell me that they can’t and wouldn’t do anything and refused to record the crime. I was shocked, even in my own country….UAE..the Police records the details of the crime.
Well all I could advise all potential visitors to Malaysia and especially Johor you do out of own risks….practise slef defense tourism and not expect the Police to do anything or even protect you.

Singaporeans who has the extra cash should not buy properties in JB, Msia. If hav money, save it for HDB. Cos the value will go up if you can hold long enough till the economy stablise. Or else you guys can consider other states in Msia rather than JB.
