Coup d’etat in Bangkok! September 20, 2006Posted by elizabethwong in Current Affairs, Democracy, International, Politics, Southeast Asia.
SMSs have been flying back and forth Bangkok and KL since news broke out of the military coup in Bangkok.
The latest one I received from a Bangkok-based politician at 1215 am says the following:-
“Confirm Gen Sonti takeover power. Thaksin must go to ICC (International Criminal Court) Court.”
Thusfar, news have been going around about tanks moving in the city. Some tanks have parked outside government buildings whereas some military personnel have entered into a number of them.
The army television station has also suspended their regular programme and played instead, patriotic songs with images of the King.
PM Thaksin is still in New York for the United Nations General Assembly and ordered a state of emergency in the city. He has also relieved the Army chief of his official duties, according to the International Herald Tribune. Not that the Army chief is listening to Thaksin.
