From spinning gasing to researching cancer July 4, 2007

Posted by elizabethwong in Malaysia.

Perhaps, finally, the National Science Academy figured out that “pulling-tea” (teh-tarek) in zero gravity condition just isn’t going to work and spinning the ‘gasing’ may annoy those Cosmonauts to give our Bolehnauts the big heave-ho in space.

I’m not sure how batik painting in space will fit into this new programme.

Oh – There’s a Bolehnaut blog, by the way.

Malaysia’s first astronaut, involved in a US$25 million space programme, will carry out scientific research including a study on the growth of cancer cells in outer space.

The astronaut would conduct research on cells, bacteria and the crystallisation of protein, said Abdul Rahman Abdul Jamal, director of the Molecule Medical Institute at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

“The research is aimed at giving local scientists the opportunity to study, design and conduct experiments in space,” Abdul Rahman said, cited by the Bernama news agency.

Zulkeffeli Mat Jusoh, national astronaut programme director, said most Malaysians thought sending a fellow countryman into space was a waste of time and money.

“Worse, many think we will spin a top in space or make milk tea,” he was quoted as saying by the Star newspaper.

(Note2Self: Didn’t Agriculture Ministry parliamentary secretary Rohani Abdul Karim tell parliament last year that our Bolehnaut would play “batu seremban”, spin tops and make “Teh Tarik” for his Russian Astronaut pals in space?)

Russia will send Malaysia’s first cosmonaut into space in October 2007 as part of a scientific mission aboard the International Space Station.

The two countries signed a deal to send the cosmonaut into space on board Russia’s Soyuz spacecraft during a visit to Malaysia by Russian President Vladimir Putin in August 2003.

It is part of a billion-dollar deal for 18 Sukhoi 30-MKM fighter jets.

This is another waste of good money. What do we can achieve..except to brag Malaysian was space too. We can’t even made a decent car…..and here we are going up….like paper Superman….hahahahahaha

4. V T - July 5, 2007

5. monsterball - July 6, 2007

Bodonaut will be wearing a space suit painted with our national flag like a clown in the circus…then at one point he is going to sing..’Malaysia is truly Asia”….hoping to get few aliens to visit our country…….hahahahahahaha

We have been wasting mone for 50 years. Why stop now? 🙂

some people support this, some people don’t, fair enough. But at least it has seriously awakened interest in science for many kids. For me, it is much better than spending billions on grooming and sending badminton players, footballers, bowlers and thousands other sportsmen to thousands of sportsmeet etc over the years. What exactly do sporting achievements give to our country? Better this angkasawan lark – not so expensive, bloody good image for the country, inspire kids etc.

At least if u don’t support the program, support the astronauts. Do give them a kind word or two at http://www.angkasawan.com.my/blog

EW: We didn’t say they were going there to spin tops or paint batek – the government did. And I can’t recall our government spending billions on badminton or squash. Anyone?
