Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail – ‘Correct’ (English; BM)
Lim Kit Siang – ‘Correct
Param Curamaswamy – ‘Correct
R. Sivarasa – ‘Correct
Bar Council – ‘Correct

An old friend, who relocated far from the maddening crowd to escape yuppies, television, internet and newspapers, was quite aghast when he heard over dinner, Nazri’s offer of ‘plastic surgery’ for the whistleblower of the Lingam-Fairuz Videotape scandal.

“In other words, the government is offering to rearrange his face at its expense? Sounds more like a threat!”

Distance can give one a different perspective when it comes to politics of the capital.

Meanwhile, the clock ticks away for R. Sivarasa and TT Sim, as the ACA deadline draws closer (this Thursday) for them to ‘deliver’ the identity of the whistleblower; the Bar Council is under police investigation; Anwar Ibrahim’s office is still watched by the police and phones are tapped; still we are no nearer to having a Royal Commission of Inquiry.

Even if a Whistleblower Protection Bill is tabled in the coming session of Parliament (end October), it will be months before it comes to force.

Oh, spare a thought for Nazri’s press secretary. Not many people realize there’s no glamour or glory but only gore and mayhem being a press sec in the first place.

What I meant: Nazri
Tuesday, 09 October 2007, The Sun

MINISTER in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamad Nazri Abdul Aziz agreed that a Witness Protection Act did not exist in Malaysia. He said he had got his press secretary to inform the press to correct his statement on Sunday but it was not done.

“The government is looking to enact a law to protect whistleblowers, there is a need for such a law,” he said in a phone interview.

Nazri said when he spoke to reporters on Sunday, he was referring to all available Acts in the country that offered some protection to witnesses, like the Anti-Corruption Act, Criminal Procedure Code, Evidence of Child Witness Act and Anti-Trafficking In Persons Act.

He said he had asked his press secretary to inform the press to clarify his statement, but no clarification has been made.

In 2002, former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim had said a witness protection scheme would be introduced to assist Malaysia’s effort to combat terrorism.

In August this year, Inspector- General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan also called for a Witness Protection Act to shield those who help in police investigations or testify in criminal cases.

Kopral Sirul and Azhar of the Altantuya case should be excited with this offer. They don’t have to go through the trouble of having the cops to nicely dress them up with all those bandages every time they appear at the Shah Alam HC for their hearing. Now they can sleep those extra hours before court and smile for the camera.Dream come true. A great package for 2 is waiting for them after the verdict. A new life with a new face and a new home in Raub.

6. malaysiancares - October 9, 2007

Nazri must be plain stupid to make such a statement. Not fit to be a minister.
