SEVENTY-seven years ago, in an isolated valley of Bukit Lagong, Sungai Buloh, Selangor, there were leprosy patients, sent to live in the Sungai Buloh Leprosy Settlement, where they found hope and dignity. It was a heaven that allowed them to re-define themselves as human beings and enabled them to make friends and sustain friendships, express their feelings, form families and be individuals who contributed to their own community.

Recently, the government announced plans to preserve part of the settlement as a national heritage. But 40 acres (16.19ha) of the settlement has been surrendered to the government, to make way for the medical faculty of the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

Dora芳齡二十五的 Dora 今晨在莎亞南 (in front of Padini Holdings) 被二人綁架。

Watch how a gaggle of coppers arrest a man during the Hindraf rally on Jalan Ampang (1 man vs 10?) and a police officer in uniform gave the f’ler a nice kick in the ribs.

Waliao! So damn brave lar our police (that’s why our crime rate so low – not). But when tens of thousands are in front of you, would youi dare kick that man?

Puk-puk-puk…

(The sound effects are also applicable to PM Abdullah Badawi – a real chicken for threatening to use the ISA.)

(This piece first appeared in Malaysiakini.com on 28 Nov 2007, and should provide some reflection for those who still think Sunday’s rally was ethno-religio-centric, an act akin to gorging one’s eyes to remain completely blind to the plight and pulse of the poor and marginalised.)

Future in the streets?

Nov 24…

I had taken my grandniece to a mall to get her some materials she required to maintain her scrapbook. As she got into the mall foyer, she saw huge decorative pieces put up there to welcome the Christmas season and the New Year. She said, “So beautiful….” Then she paused for a while and said, “Thatha (Grandfather), why Deepavali not so beautiful…?”

I could not respond. Frankly, I had no immediate answer to the innocent query.

I could not explain the politics or economics of it all to a littlegirl. Nor could I share thoughts about the growing global commercial culture around Christmas. It immediately saddened me to note that this little Malaysian, hardly 8-years-old, had just uttered her first observation of a discriminatory environment she will be growing up in.

To respond, I just mumbled, “Yes…but this is beautiful…”, obviously avoiding the question. For the moment, that was it, and we were immersed in the things she needed to buy. But I was certain that the observation would be registered and archived in her long-term memory.

The meaning of this little episode dawned on me only a day later.

Apparently today’s supposed to be the PM’s birthday.
So is this the present his men gave to him at the Kelantan State Assembly?
Are these the kind of representatives we want in our state assemblies and in Parliament?

‘Mari lawan’ became a reality in the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly yesterday, when State Assemblyman, Dato’ Nozula Mat Diah (BN / UMNO-Paloh) kicked Mohd Zaki Ibrahim (PAS-Kelaboran) during Question and Answer Session in Kelantan State Assembly.

The 2 minute-4 second video clip recorded the ‘black day’ of Kelantan State Assembly in the 50-year history of the nation.

“Some 20,000 penyangak (crooks) who participated in the rally would not jeopardise our viewpoint of the entire community,” he (Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Nazri Abdul Aziz) told a press conference at the Parliament lobby today. (Malaysiakini, 27 November 2007)

:-O

Now “Indians = Crooks”???!!! WTF.

Someone, anyone, please stop them from opening their mouths.
