Big ears (and air in between) January 4, 2008

For a split-second round about Christmas, I had thought that the panic over the possibility of the non-renewal of the Herald magazine’s BM section was state-manufactured, in order to make the Christians in this country grateful to the BN government for its benevolence and progressiveness, once the printing permit is granted.

Indeed, most Christians praised their Lord and cried ‘Hallelujah’  at year-end.

In less than a week:-

The restrictions on the use of the word “Allah” was still enforceable and shall be upheld as decided by the Cabinet in two of its meetings – on Oct 18 and Nov 1, 2006, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Abdullah Mohd Zin said.

(…)

“I would also like to remind the public that apart from the word ‘Allah’, three other words – Solat, Kaabah and Baitullah – are also prohibited and cannot be used in other religions’ publications,” he said.  (Source: The Star, 4 January 2008)

Now, even the Sikhs are upset:-

“We have used the terms Allah and Rahim, for example, extensively in our writings and in our prayers to refer to the One God. The word Allah is used in our main holy scripture. Sikh gurus in India have used these terms for centuries, they have become part of the Punjabi language, and we are still using them today,” said Harcharan when contacted. (Source: Malaysiakini, 4 January 2008)

Clearly I gave too much credit to the band of Badawi. The latter may claim to have big ears, but evidently, nothing between them.

It does appear that they want to make Malaysians as dumb and stupid as them. They can’t even comprehend or appreciate the diversity, similarities and the meeting points of  languages, customs, cultures and history. (Have you seen how much the middle school’s history textbook has shrunk?)

This isn’t ‘Islamisation’ as the US State Department would like to tout. This is ‘pembodohfication‘ and ‘pembebalism‘. And those who’d voted BN in 2004 are now receiving their just desserts.

I couldn’t agree more.

2. tupingera - January 4, 2008

Islam (Had Hari) is the convenient refuge for these umno scoundrels.

3. aiyomanaboleh - January 4, 2008

Yes everyone except them are upset. As long as they are the majority, it’s what they want and not your sensitivities they are concerned with. Don’t like ah, leave lah, they will tell you. To mimic RPK, ” the recent spate of events are now slowly making sense”. I only hope this myopic outlook will not cost the country dearly.

4. klconfidential - January 4, 2008

Pisses me off,this.

Just when I was relieved, it started again. This time the religious guy wants some limelight. Probably felt that Joe Baharum was stealing it from him.

Argh! Frustrated! But we must fight this, guys. It’s just too ridiculous. I need some cendikiawan (thinker) who is knowledgeable in this and can quote anyting from history, constitution or whatever.

Fight them with facts. I really hope we win. I can’t stand being a Malaysian now.

More and more I am inclind to look even deeper intot he meaning of the word “ethnic cleansing”….As one writer wrote in Malasyiakini, most of the government departments have been ethnically cleansed off vermints like chinese and Indians….maybe a token one or two left for decorations. All of uniformed forces have been ethnically cleansed of Indian and chinese leeches leaving a token few at the lower levels. Why these leeches and vermints even bother is indeed a wonder. Now, when you use “ethnic cleansing” in this context, is it right to use? Is it clear taht the use of the term “ethnic cleansing” in these terms is not the same as when it is used to describe what happened in Bosnia, Rwanda, Hitler’s Germany and so on?

After all if the Malasyian Cabinet ses itself sanctified enough to decide who can and who cannot use words like “allah” and so on, I supppose they can also decide on this. The question is we pig eating, casino going, alcohol drinking vermints and leeches also get to read these words and also get to hear them when used by Muslims. Does it not get contaminated when it falls in our ears or catches our sights? i am confused really….I am only asking!

6. monsterball - January 4, 2008

I think the name of God is “Salem”….not ‘Salam”
hahahahaha…These UMNO jokers borrowed so many English words….to form the Bahasa language…and infact…it is a very very new language in the world….dare to talk about “Allah”….when their big ears hears nothing…big mouth talking cock and bull….pea brains logic are the laughing stock to the whole world…..and once awhile.get the right man with all the right stuffs….turned to be the most corrupted and a con man.
So they have big eyes and do not see too!!
That’s why few have bodyguards.not one…but few to follow them…protect them from Hindraf…BERSIH…ghosts……..hahahahahaha
So do they have big heart…sure they do…only for themselves…never enough…always want more and more…not by noble ways…but how to cheat and con the country. Selfish..selfish….can clearly be noted…just watch closely.
And the world is such…money can do wonders..keep you live much longer than others….but it is a living death….one cling to it for the love of life…not love for natural living. Such wee the past dictators…thinking the are god gifted people..but in fact are followers of Lucifer…..Saitan.
Therefore…it is real….Lucifer rules many part of the the world and we must not let it rule small good Malaysia.

Maybe we should seek international opinion on the restriction of ‘Allah’ only to Muslim. can try OIC?

9. UMONO forever! - January 4, 2008

Head u lose, tail u lose!

They have the “Polemics” game perfected to an art!

Head- if they were to rescind the directive later on, what will happen?
Vote swing from non-muslims goes to whom? It requires only a little effort of persuasion to grassroots UMNO members to retain loyalty.

Tail- assuming directive unchanged. Vote swing from muslim fence-sitters goes to whom?

So, win & win (not win win) is the name of the game!

This is called “Divide & Rule” gamesmanship skills honed to even surpass the master, the British.

May I suggest you all not to shout till your throats hoarse and play into their hands. They are not really interested in the rights or wrongs. All they are interested in is “How many votes can be gained by playing up the issue!”

By the way, notice how they mentioned the date the ruling was effected? 2002! The “Blame” game. Good, eh?

Go sit down and think up another strategy to play the game! Or even better, set you own rules for the game!

10. hasilox - January 4, 2008

Is there a way to set a limit to stupidity? These jokers are simply unbelievable. They practically screw everything on-sight.

Imagine if the Thais did such to their language, what will be our opinion of their language? No need to guess how lowly they drove BM downward. Gosh, this is sickening.

11. kfchan - January 5, 2008

A special long rope has been given to BN. It would be interesting to see how they go about hanging themselves. Many sceptics had raised their reservation as to the capabilities of the opposition to form a government and run the country.

But judging from the current government (think of Pak Liar, Nazri, Zam and that fler who challenged Fong Po Kuan to a fist fight and etc), I say there are no way the opposition can do any worse.

Is there any wise man in BN? And I don’t mean being crafty and deceitful. Those are their area of specializations. Can they actually do anything good honorably? Can they run the country well if it demands integrity? Sigh. May Allah bless Malaysia. Oops, forgot I can’t use that word.

12. yh - January 5, 2008

little napoleons climbing over his head? or this is Islam Hadhari? either way, he cant win.

13. vlps - January 5, 2008

luckily, schooling days are behind me. now is play time. *bang bang bang*

14. monsterball - January 5, 2008

hahahahahahaha…Now the Sikhs are confused!!
The have been using the word…”Allah” for centuries and don’t know what to do…since the government is banning others using that word.

15. simon - January 5, 2008

Most Christians are actually in favor of restricting the use of the word Allah to muslims only. This is a dream come true, christian prayers have been totally answered.

However the problem with such black and white ban is that it could have a lot of implications….such as vegetarians would also be banned from saying …..beef…….well since they dun eat beef, they should not be allowed to say and use the word beef….or beef burger or even Big Mac…..makes sense right? Hence such vegetarians who use the word beef will be punished by rehabilatation, custodial sentencing and 300 lashes whipping, removal of citizenship rights including birth certificate, MyKad, passport and subsequent deportation to country of ethnic origin after release from vegetarian prison.

16. trashed - January 5, 2008

Will some of the State anthems be re-written since non-Muslims cannot print/use the word “Allah” to denote God ?

17. writeinyourvote - January 5, 2008

that’s ridiculous, you can’t restrict what Christians say, they’ll just make another denomination!

18. anon - January 5, 2008

simon,

I visited the website through the links you provided above. The photos on their “About” page which are supposedly places of where they meet look like the “church” signage have been doctored. The website smells pretty dodgy.

19. Ancut Nyamai - January 5, 2008

What Simon say is true, Christians rarely or never use “Allah” as references to GOD.

20. lucia - January 5, 2008

well herald was indeed very happy to get the permit that in its latest issue it had the word ‘we have our permit’ printed big and bold on its front cover, above the mathhead… and now this…

simon and ancut nyamai
yes but not for the bumiputera christians or the christians in sabah and sarawak. they use allah all the time. me, as a chinese christian, yes i rarely use allah.

haha writeinyourvote, that’s so true. christians are famous for starting another denomination just because their belief are different. too bad eh (because i’m christian – roman catholic to be exact).

i hope this news of the cabinet ‘copyrighting’ the word allah will made news round the world so that everybody would laugh at them! esp. with their reason ‘will confuse muslim’. why that itself is an insult to our muslim brethrens.

21. John - January 5, 2008

What is all these confusion? Adopt the philosophy of Buddhism. The issue of which god to believe does not arise.

22. Sharing - January 5, 2008

Why the matter flip-flop?
Because it is among the UNMO!!
—————————-
When illogic came out, some logic must back-up!

Guess:
The Deputy barked the wrong subject
trying to show the Church their authority and superiority.
The Minister tried to calm the problem with compromise
but have to save face half-way.
PM to show HIS support to subordinates, so he was confirming!

They thought it is the Church who will fight back
but forgetting bullies are thorn to the eyes of most
Most probably they care not the vote of the Church
but ignoring the other could be more!

Hope GE will show!

23. stenson - January 5, 2008

Who care what simple simon says.He is trying to lick kj’s balls. You will get the title datuk soon nutty simon.Dont claim yourself to be a christian. You are a paganic christian.

24. Klaw - January 6, 2008

To those of you generalizing that Christians rarely or never use Allah as references to God, I’m pretty sure there are Christians in East Malaysia that speak BM do.

The point not to generalize just because you’re a Christian and you speak to god in English.

25. monsterball - January 6, 2008

Lets all go to our respective praying houses and confess our sins…talking God stuffs! That’s blasphemy!!!……my teacher told me so…then I told him.he can go to heaven…….I don’t mind hell.
Stenson seldom talk…but when he talks…few words only…..make so much sense.
I just cannot help laughing UMNO guys …talking Allah stuffs…for 50 years. What bloody scumbag dogs they are.
If they fear God…or are God fearing people….then.no need ISA…ever ready to give permit for rallies..supporting freedom of speeches..no need tear gas or water cannons treatments.
Their God is stolen money.
Did we vote them to talk Allah stuffs?…wasting time and money…as usual?…no work…..just keep talking nonsense?

26. simon - January 6, 2008

#They have the “Polemics” game perfected to an art!#

Its NOT polemics.

With the global advertising and branding programming campaign currently ongoing to downgrade a brand, the victim brand is fast losing its intrinsic value. The problem is that when Brand X loses its value, Brand Y may be affected too. Hence people must be told that
Brand Y is NOT Brand X. Its time to differentiate the different brands.

For example ….we are told/programmed during a branding exercise that Brand X, a washing powder kills victims upon contact with skin. If the advertiser is not careful; people minds will think that ALL washing powders kills upon contact with skin. Hence at the same time we have to differentiate Brand Y which is good for you and saves your life.

The classic branding programming exercise is to perform an action and name a brand or name a brand and perform an action. Over a period of time, a brand will be associated with an action. Hence when a chappie shouts a brand and performs an action to do an advertising branding programming exercise we know what is his brand and we know that he is not a Christian. This will make and program the Christian brand into people’s mind to stand apart as the more likable brand.

EW wrote “And those who’d voted BN in 2004 are now receiving their just desserts.”

And I say “Ouch!”. I was one of “those” who did it. Seemed like a good thing, that time. There was so much promise, so much hope… My mistake. Never again.

28. simon - January 6, 2008

#To those of you generalizing that Christians rarely or never use Allah as references to God, I’m pretty sure there are Christians in East Malaysia that speak BM do.#

I already know about the east my and arabic christians, sikh etc etc etc no need for you to tell me.

Thats due to the Catholic Church’s role in “changing” the Bible Quote “to suit local conditions” Unquote. and the real Christians know who is behind it.

The Bible CANNOT be changed and said word has never been used in the REAL KJV Bible despite what some people might tell you and cannot be found in any ancient untranslated version whether Greek version or Nag Hammadi or Dead Sea Scrolls versions etc etc at all.

God=Tuhan

Allah=Jehovah (specific references according to the Good Books, but semantics do apply here)

*For the UMNOrites who think they could make hay of inferring “Allah” can only be uttered by Muslims, then they better start off by not maurading any words from the English vocabulary. Let UMNO speaks BM and/or Arabics only.

jeancumlately says -“And I say “Ouch!”. I was one of “those” who did it. Seemed like a good thing, that time. There was so much promise, so much hope… My mistake. Never again.”

NDTV: Do you have any evidence to back your government’s charge that the Hindraf has links with terrorists?

D S Vellu: Hindraf said they would fight like the Tigers, the way the Tigers are fighting in Sri Lanka. It was by Vedamurthy. After he talked like that, we did an investigation and it was felt that he may have gone there for training.

NDTV: Do you have evidence of this?

D S Vellu: No. It is our suspicion.

The temples in addition to being the religious focus of the Arabs, were also the cultural centres of learning. It was the temples that were the venues of literary and poetry competitions, of glorious festivals.

The virtues most highly prized by people of Arvasthan were bravery in battle, patience in misfortune, loyalty to one’s tribe, and generosity to the needy and the poor. They proudly upheld the value of tolerance in matters of religious practice and belief. The respect they showed towards other people’s religions was fully in keeping with their Vedic spiritual tradition.

The status of women was that of pride and equal respect. How could it be otherwise with a people whose chief deity was the goddess Durga (Alla).

36. Sulaiman M Ibrahim - January 20, 2008

as a muslim, Allah is One,not two ,not three. Definition of Allah is clearly spelt in surah Al Ikhlas. Anybody is welcome to find the meaning of Allah or chant Allah sometime or always. But it is a differnt thing altogether for a muslim to refer to Jesus as Allah -which is a definition in christianity. If one goes by the Book [the original evangelical-injil ] their definition presumably means Allah is the One and Only one. The concept of the Three in one one is not accepted in Islam. As a muslim ,whoever our neighbour wants to pray to is his business. But to call Jesus [Alaihi Salam], an important prophet in Islam as Allah is out of order. Of course what you want to think privately ,again is your private matter. The Government must keep the concepts in Islam clear so that the boundaries and definitions are properly understood both by muslims and christians alike to promote a nice and civilised malaysia
