A ‘behind the scenes’ video of Toni’s beautiful voice and of our mad rehearsal that Sam and Jerry did, which was only available as a podcast until Jerry put on YouTube today.

Toni sang ‘Like a Star’ then, for Suaram’s Tribute to Human Rights Defenders a year and a half ago. Today, she joins the rest of our stars. May she have a good journey home.

On Tuesday, my friend, Salman passed away at UH, a victim of a hit-and-run accident in the affluent Section 16.

He was walking back at around 10 pm and when he was hit, it was so loud some of his neighbours heard it, including his sister. She called an ambulance, not reaslising it was her brother who was hit.

I took some time off yesterday to visit his house. Election or no election, he was still my friend.

Salman was a keen photographer and we had been planned a group photo exhibition together. But of  late, he is better known as the person who has been taking those fantastic panoramic photos, on the campaign trail of Anwar Ibrahim.

I was lucky to have caught with him last week and spoke about his work. “We got to sit down after the elections,” I’d said to him.

One of our madcap ideas last year was to go to Janda Baik with a group, stake our tripods and take night photos.  There is said to be a spot filled with an abundance of stars. Now we won’t be able to do it.

This has cast a pall on the remaining days of the election. Many of us were aghast and broken that someone could drive and hit another person, and leave him there to die. I appeal to to anyone who may have witnessed this inhumane crime to let us know the details.

We shall miss you, Salman.

In the space of 4 weeks, we lost 3 good ‘Reformist’ men who helped change the course of history.

Adlan passed away this afternoon.

  • Adlan Benan Omar
  • Christopher Fernando
  • Pak Lang Zaki

Al Fatihah.

“Young members of the Bar may not know of the struggles that Razak Ahmad has been through, fighting for what he believes in.

There are a number of things that I respect about Razak. Years ago, he could have easily joined the ruling party, and become a Minister at least. There were, I believe, more than a few opportunities in which he could have crossed over to the “winning side”.

He chose not to. He clung on to his convictions.

I once asked him whether it had occurred to him to try to make changes from within the system. He replied that, under our system, that would not be possible.

What would probably happen is that one then becomes part of the system that creates the problems; and he does not want to become that.

It is easy to proclaim to hold on to principles. It is difficult to continuously do so knowing full well what one is giving up.

Razak passed the test, many times over.”

Beliau seorang peguam hak asasi membela nasib rakyat miskin, terutamanya masyarakat peneroka bandar.

Death’s double-whammy this week.

While all film buffs dissected “Blow Up” (1966), not many have seen his banned 1972 documentary (voiced-over by the man himself) of China – “Chung Kuo” during the cultural revolution; an extraordinary exploration of a then closed society.

Loga, 54, of the wonderful Alleycats, passed away this morning.

It was only last month when we were asking ourselves when and where Alleycats would be playing. It was Suaram’s favourite band and we’ve always tried to make it a group outing each time they played in PJ.

RIP Loga.
Terima Kasiiiihhhh….
