This is not a joke.
Malaysian Minister for Tourism, Tengku Adnan was reported by Sin Chew (9 March 07, Early Evening edition pp 5) to have said the following
(non-authoritative translation from Chinese to English, please feel free to improve/correct this, Mr J and Mr Tuna.):-
“Bloggers are liars. They use all sort of ways to cheat others. From what I know, out of 10,000 unemployed bloggers, 8,000 are women.
“Bloggers like to spread rumours, they don’t like national unity. Today our country has achievements because we are tolerant and compromising. Otherwise we will have civil war.
“Malays will kill Chinese, Chinese will kill Malays, Indians will kill everybody else.”
He asked people not to believe bloggers and gamble away Malaysia’s future because 50 years of Merdeka (Independence) takes a lot to achieve it.
“We have to show to the people our positive attitude. If the world learns from us, there will peace and no civil war.
He said this in reaction to an Indonesian blogger/tv journalist, Nila Tanzil, who didn’t have many nice things to write about Malaysian bureaucracy while she was here shooting a travel show. But at least she was polite about in her blog. Her colleague was more honest.
Mr Minister. Did you realise Thursday was a quasi-sacred day for feminists and women’s rights activists? A most inappropriate time to be going around calling women liars, anti-national unity etc. etc.
And to be going after Nila when her partner was killed in the Yogya Garuda tragedy only yesterday? Don’t you even have a heart? Weren’t you taught manners and etiquette in school or at home?
Oh. I forgot. Umno (cut to scene:- unsheathe keris, wave in the air).

It’s funny, what he said, in a very sad way… I guess his next public statement would be something along the line of “I was misquoted” and “it wasn’t me, it’s my twin brother”…

Considering this posting was the first thing I saw when logging into WordPress.com, the comment looks more like a gimmick to attract attention to the Visit Malaysia 2007 campaign. After all, how better to put Malaysia on the map by making a remark that brings us back to the Dark Ages – that will anger women bloggers? After all, it takes a spark to set fire to a dry forest, and now that the flames have risen, people will be getting curious about this strange tiny country called Malaysia which sues bloggers and treats women like objects. are you sure the journalist quoted correctly … my past experience proved that sometimes one thing was said during the press interview but something else can get published.
EW: I wish he was misquoted, I too read the piece more than 5 times, but highly unlikely. The first bit about women bloggers, he went on to state that he knew he might lose some women’s votes over his remarks, but he wasn’t going to apologise. (see Jeremiah Foo’s more complete translation). The second racist bits about us trying to kill each other, were said in three parts in progression.

Why isn’t he putting his effort and ensuring the success of VMY07 instead? I just returned from a holiday abroad and upon landing in KLIA from a connecting flight from Singapore’s Changi Airport, one can see the vast difference between both countries. Looks like Singapore is doing a better job in ensuring the tourists are arriving. Buck up, Mr Tourism Minister!!

My favourite part of all this is when he starts predicting how racial warfare would turn out, and that the Indians will come out on top. That’s socio-political commentary for you.
With so many gaffes as M’sia’s tourism head thus far – my favorite is when he stereotyped Africans as ‘troublemakers’ after the M’sian police mistakenly harrassed two African-Americans – everyday the Tengku stays on is an insult to M’sians and also a confirmation of how much help the civil service needs…

I try my level best to view everything from a philosophical point of view. I’m careful when choosing my words when expressing myself. But this Tourism Minister fella has made be betray myself. So can someone please tell me from where this piece of g@*#*^$ came from? Even the New American Webster dictionary does not list the word S*#T but we have one running our Tourism Ministry. I shudder everytime I realise that half-baked, unqualified politicians are running our country.
To say that bloggers are liars is NOT true. Bloggers see things through their own perspective. We are not like your ordinary, predictable and yet biased media which publish brainwash people ‘sesuka hati’ according to your own preferences. In addition to that, the statement is a sexist one to be honest.

It is politicians like this chap that bring shame to this wonderful country of ours, championing the erroneous notion that without BN running this country, it will degenerate into a warzone with different races killing each other. Yes, we shud vote zealots out of their office. It is BN politicians that love to play this dangerous racial card to prolong their political hegemony. I have lived in this country all my life, and hard as life is for so many ordinary Malaysians, they have more common sense in their head to practise hating other races. If you’re foreigner, when you visit Malaysia, think twice before u post your memory to your blog, you might fall under group as quote by our Tourism Minister “Blogger=Women+Without Job”
I see a lot of people dropping lines here like : “he’s stupid enough to insult female bloggers”, “sexitst”, “how could he?”, “arrogant”, “he doesn’t know what he’s talking about” “kill him” “skewer him” etc.
hm, for now I shall not dwell on whether he’s a sexist or not. This is because I feel that the most important issue here is the the Tengku’s apparent lack of media training. When you hold such a high up position in the government, the 1st lesson that you should realise is that the words that you use in your everyday speech is a very sensitive thing and should be used with care.
In comment 95 here, “Tee” commented that we should forgive the Tengku because he might have just said those words in anger and did not mean what he said. I beg to differ. As a politician, you are expected to keep your cool at all times.
If you can’t say anything that sounds nice, then don’t say anything at all.
Just look at politicians from Britain for example. Securing the release of 15 British sailors from Iran certainly wasn’t done through comments like, “OMG, how DARE you kidnap(think about why this word was never used instead of “detained” in the public statements) my countrymen! Release them, or I’ll jolly well nuke ya!”
That’s just not the way politicians talk. Even businessmen watch their language when dealing with customers. When you go into politics, be prepared to walk the walk and talk the talk of politicians. Macam ni barulah ada “class”..

Tengku Adnan, in plus, is not only a liar but also a real hijacker. He hijacks everythings, traditional songs from Indonesia, “batik”, “traditional bamboo music instruments or angklung from Indonesia, everythings, songs from Indian communities. He claims everythings to become a property and copyright of Malaysian people and creation. Perhaps, he will also claims all God’s creations to become Malaysian copyrights. So I recommend to this guy, stand up in front of a mirror and look at your bloody and bad face, shame on it! you can look a very disgusted face in the mirror
