IWD: Tengku Adnan whacks women bloggers March 8, 2007

This is not a joke.

Malaysian Minister for Tourism, Tengku Adnan was reported by Sin Chew (9 March 07, Early Evening edition pp 5) to have said the following

(non-authoritative translation from Chinese to English, please feel free to improve/correct this, Mr J and Mr Tuna.):-

tengkuadnanblooper.jpg“Bloggers are liars. They use all sort of ways to cheat others. From what I know, out of 10,000 unemployed bloggers, 8,000 are women.

“Bloggers like to spread rumours, they don’t like national unity. Today our country has achievements because we are tolerant and compromising. Otherwise we will have civil war.

“Malays will kill Chinese, Chinese will kill Malays, Indians will kill everybody else.”

He asked people not to believe bloggers and gamble away Malaysia’s future because 50 years of Merdeka (Independence) takes a lot to achieve it.

“We have to show to the people our positive attitude. If the world learns from us, there will peace and no civil war.

He said this in reaction to an Indonesian blogger/tv journalist, Nila Tanzil, who didn’t have many nice things to write about Malaysian bureaucracy while she was here shooting a travel show. But at least she was polite about in her blog. Her colleague was more honest.

Mr Minister. Did you realise Thursday was a quasi-sacred day for feminists and women’s rights activists? A most inappropriate time to be going around calling women liars, anti-national unity etc. etc.

And to be going after Nila when her partner was killed in the Yogya Garuda tragedy only yesterday? Don’t you even have a heart? Weren’t you taught manners and etiquette in school or at home?

Oh. I forgot. Umno (cut to scene:- unsheathe keris, wave in the air).

The end.

Updated:
Bloggers who normally write in Chinese caught wind of this and are up-in-arms.

See Smoothriver, and JerryWho has also translated the news article in full here, but not including Tengku Adnan’s rant about Bumitera in the last few paras.)

Hi there,

I just want to let you know that I am quoting this post’s content in my blog. I think it’s quite unprofessional of our own minister of tourism to say that – not to mention all of the things you’ve listed up there.

Anyway, great blog..and thanks for letting us know of this scumbag 🙂

3. MarinaM - March 9, 2007

Hi Elly, I am going to put this on my blog too. Honestly, where does he get off with statements like this?

4. Chewxy - March 9, 2007

Pure pwnage… my friend. Pure pwnage.

😀

I wrote an article called I Blog, Therefore I Lie before… :D. It was to coincide with another minister calling bloggers liars.

Of course, this Tengku Adnan fella takes the cake and eats it too 😀

5. Joash Chan - March 9, 2007

It’s funny, what he said, in a very sad way… I guess his next public statement would be something along the line of “I was misquoted” and “it wasn’t me, it’s my twin brother”…

Tengku Adnan don’t talk like a stupid man. We all know that you are the real liar. We know that you are not even Tengku. Don’t think that we will forget.

One more thing, 50 years is enough for UMNO and BN to be in power. Soon, these women will send all of you to the garbage of history!!!

8. Klaw - March 9, 2007

Normally I would be quite articulate in what I say, but, what an asshole.

9. Gallivanter - March 9, 2007

If he said that, I think he needs to step down for being plain stupid…

10. moo_t - March 9, 2007

I am not gonna throw stone on this splat shit of gahmen politikus. It will make me stinks. BTW, Bolehland minister use mainstream media(MSM) as their liken and never feel wrong about it. And the MSM is not doing their job either. How sad.

11. alliedmartster - March 9, 2007

And I wonder if Mrs Adnan blogs,or his daughter (if he has one), what about if he has a tech savvy Mom?
How the hell can we have our ministers saying things like this?
And if he cared to even read blogs? Which I am sure he doesnt, reminds me very much of a particular officer in the judicial system, which does not even know about blogs! (which turns out to be a good thing, now that we know all bloggers are liars!) Bar Humburg!

Oooi, Adnan, go crawl back to where you came from!

12. Ling Ling Chatt - March 9, 2007

That Tengku fella needs Kickdefella at the ass…. he is born a**hole and his face shows just that!

Really pity that Tengku – believes he live a sick life.

The way I see it, and I think huge number of people in the country – Malaysia – also discount newspapers from the rack for reality news. All that being published are well scripted by the dumb Mangkoks managed by the 4th Floor Monkeys.

Orrr…miii…thorrrr…fhattt.

13. Kryptos - March 9, 2007

Tengku Adnan is not from any of the Malaysian royal families. I believe, his ancestry is from Aceh royalty and that is where the Tengku in his name came from.

Some psychologists say that when you are pussy-whacked (henpecked) at home, you whack women outside the home. Kick the cat, or clout the children, when you dare not your wife.Amen.

34. narrowband - March 10, 2007

Bollocks.

Politicians in Malaysia today have all the reasons to dislike bloggers, or the internet, for that matter. Because they’re beginning to feel insecure with all the free-flow of unfiltered information.

But to make that 80% generalization is simply atrocious.

37. drowmage - March 10, 2007

Considering this posting was the first thing I saw when logging into WordPress.com, the comment looks more like a gimmick to attract attention to the Visit Malaysia 2007 campaign. After all, how better to put Malaysia on the map by making a remark that brings us back to the Dark Ages – that will anger women bloggers? After all, it takes a spark to set fire to a dry forest, and now that the flames have risen, people will be getting curious about this strange tiny country called Malaysia which sues bloggers and treats women like objects. I’m sure someone’s feeling proud just about now…..

The first bit about women bloggers, he went on to state that he knew he might lose some women’s votes over his remarks, but he wasn’t going to apologise. It is politicians like this chap that bring shame to this wonderful country of ours, championing the erroneous notion that without BN running this country, it will degenerate into a warzone with different races killing each other. Yes, we shud vote zealots out of their office. It is BN politicians that love to play this dangerous racial card to prolong their political hegemony. I have lived in this country all my life, and hard as life is for so many ordinary Malaysians, they have more common sense in their head to practise hating other races. Malaysia, 50 years is enough for this sandiwara.

86. maxwell - March 18, 2007

i wonder why sometimes you people even bother….trying to tell the dominant political clique and its supporters the importance of progressive change and reforms is like trying to teach a donkey how to speak.

malaysia is already a doom country. nothing, no one, bloggers included can do anything to help this country from sinking….

for progressive reforms to take place, the whole cultural tradition and the mindset of its people has to be shakened up and overhauled ….

but this is not possible…

even the chief minister in the state where i come from knows this…he has send all his children at a very age to the united states for studies already…how come they dun have to undergo ns training?????

you can blog all you want ….vent all your frustrations here…..but it is not going to matter a bit.

whoever wins in the next election–let us say it is the opposition—the tools of oppression in this country —isa, emergency ordinance act, restricted residence act…..will always be in place…no one in power in this country would be so stupid to get rid of these legislations that can serve to strengthen their powers…..
these legislations are necessary to clamp down on unions, workers’ rights,….ensuring that workers’ wages stays the most minimum level…it is after all the big capitalists in this country–the ones with the money to move things around—that are the puppet masters of this country….

it is the relationship of this big and mighty capitalist class and the political clique of this country that needs to be examined carefully…
careful scrutiny will reveal that racial lingo….issues are thrown in at the appropriate moment to divert the atention of the people…

all these tactics–referred to as positive and negative integration–are not new…throughout history, they have been employed by political cliques of countries that refused to grow up, to accept modernisation…..to progress…they are employed to help the old ruling elite to maintain power…

forget malaysia…

I see a lot of people dropping lines here like : “he’s stupid enough to insult female bloggers”, “sexitst”, “how could he?”, “arrogant”, “he doesn’t know what he’s talking about” “kill him” “skewer him” etc.

hm, for now I shall not dwell on whether he’s a sexist or not. This is because I feel that the most important issue here is the the Tengku’s apparent lack of media training. When you hold such a high up position in the government, the 1st lesson that you should realise is that the words that you use in your everyday speech is a very sensitive thing and should be used with care.

In comment 95 here, “Tee” commented that we should forgive the Tengku because he might have just said those words in anger and did not mean what he said. I beg to differ. As a politician, you are expected to keep your cool at all times.

If you can’t say anything that sounds nice, then don’t say anything at all.

Just look at politicians from Britain for example. Securing the release of 15 British sailors from Iran certainly wasn’t done through comments like, “OMG, how DARE you kidnap(think about why this word was never used instead of “detained” in the public statements) my countrymen! Release them, or I’ll jolly well nuke ya!”

That’s just not the way politicians talk. Even businessmen watch their language when dealing with customers. When you go into politics, be prepared to walk the walk and talk the talk of politicians. Macam ni barulah ada “class”..

Tengku Adnan, in plus, is not only a liar but also a real hijacker. He hijacks everythings, traditional songs from Indonesia, “batik”, “traditional bamboo music instruments or angklung from Indonesia, everythings, songs from Indian communities. He claims everythings to become a property and copyright of Malaysian people and creation. Perhaps, he will also claims all God’s creations to become Malaysian copyrights. So I recommend to this guy, stand up in front of a mirror and look at your bloody and bad face, shame on it! you can look a very disgusted face in the mirror

The LIE that was used to force the rakyat to vote for them in fear of another May 13. The PR today is multiracial, therefore we will not have “Malays will kill Chinese, Chinese will kill Malays, Indians will kill everybody else.” Its a LIE. I think putting all these ‘powerful’ comments there are like ‘lighting fire to a crowded public bus stop with a remote control car’. Commenters & bloggers are COWARDS! Always put slenderous comments using nick names…grow up, if u think u are strong in ur stand, then stand up with ur identity & pride. I think some bloggers are liars. Its an open whiteboard without restriction, so bloggers never double check on facts before posting.

Elizabeth Wong just got ‘rape’ repeatly by the BN backed media when they threaten to publish her nude pics…in public. How can malaysians known for their sensibility just kept silence….good grief. records of inconsistancy in msia is so awful with conspiracies that left a big gaping hole for any interpretation and no sense of accountability frm so called government officials. In the international standard this is unacceptable and any investors will be so scare to come to your country becos they risk being kidnapped, killed, threaten, abuse, infringement, violations, played out etc. Msia use to be a better advance country with fantastic leaders. Today sad to say it almost bankrupt. Your state gov just being coup de’tat like a wild wild west without civic conscious and rule of law…. as if one can just switch shopping malls at the preference without following the rule of law in yoru constitution. what kind of country is this ?…beginning to look like colombia and zimbabwe…….shame of you malaysian for tolerating such an injustice. p/z ignore tengkuadnan comment, forgive him,he is known to make nonsensical comments together with a few others who think they are the illuminati of msia ie. only they r the clever one the rest of msian are stupid and can be deceived and manipulated without them knowing.
